In late 2021, operators of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Swarm constellation notice something worrisome: satellites measuring the Earth's magnetic field have begun to sink into the atmosphere at an unusually fast rate. which is 10 times faster, the change is close to the start of a new solar cycle.

And experts think it could be the start of a difficult year for spacecraft orbiting our Earth.” The satellite is sinking about two and a half kilometers [1.5 miles] a year,” Anja Stromme, ESA's Swarm mission manager, told Space.com. They almost dived together. The rate of sinking between December and April was 20 kilometers [12 miles] per year.”
Satellites near-Earth are often subjected to residual atmospheric drag, which will slowly slow the spacecraft and eventually cause them to fall to Earth. (They usually do not survive reentry and atmospheric combustion.) This atmospheric drag forces ISS operators to perform regular "reboost" maneuvers to maintain the station's orbit. at 400 miles (400 km) above the earth
