Thursday, Jun 11 2009Researchers Seek To Develop More Effective Insect Repellents To Combat Diseases, Including MalariaA group of international researchers have embarked on a five-year, $8.5 million initiative to develop new insect repellents with the aim of controlling diseases such as malaria, the Boston Globe reports. The scientists aim to develop new substances by investigating mosquitoes  sense of smell and hope to develop low-cost, safe and long-lasting repellants.  As part of the effort -- funded largely by the Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative, which receives most of its funding from the Bill  Melinda Gates Foundation -- John Carlson, a professor of biology at Yale University, and colleagues have developed ways of testing compounds using fruit flies. The team has identified the genes that enable both fruit flies and mosquitoes to smell. Each gene produces a different receptor, which is located on the surface of a nerve cell of the insect s antenna. If a mol owala water bottle ecule floating in the air fits into a receptor, the nerve sends a signal so the insect can smell it. The researchers can genetically alter fruit flies with a nerve cell that produces a mosquito receptor and monitor each cell using an electrode. Carlson currently is testing different compounds to see how they affect different mosquito receptors. He ultimately aims to create a sme yeezy mx  stanley ca ll map that would show how each of the mosquito s receptors responds to various chemicals. Carlson sends compounds that look
